HOW ABOUT THOSE NEW YORK FUCKING RANGERS? The hottest team in hockey returned for battle on Saturday night, killing the Sharks like Richard Dreyfus in Jaws, with a 3-1 victory. I'm so excited writing this, I don't know where to start.
How about I give you the official NY Ranger postgame notes first, then my reaction afterwards, because this is just impressive and golden material.

accomplished these feats.

leader is now tied with Mike Richter for the most 20-win seasons in

recorded at least 20 wins in each of the last 10 seasons (2005-06 –
2014-15), and he is the 22nd goalie in NHL history to earn at least 20
wins in 10 or more seasons in his career. Lundqvist has posted a 1.25 GAA and a .950 SV% (96 saves on 101 shots) over his personal four-game winning streak. In his last 12 games, he has registered an 11-1-0 record, along with a 1.57 GAA, a .939 SV%, and 1 SO.
Lundqvist has also posted a 19-6-3 record, along with a 1.97 GAA, a
.928 SV%, and 5 SO in his last 28 games. He is tied for seventh in the
NHL in wins (20) this season.
– Chris Kreider recorded two points (one
goal, one assist), including the game-winning goal, registered three
shots on goal, was credited with three hits, and posted a plus-two
rating in the contest. He has posted six multi-point games this
season, including two in the last five contests (three goals, two
assists over the last five games). Kreider has also tallied the game-winning goal in two of the last four games.
Kreider has tallied six of his eight goals and registered 13 of his 20
points this season on the road. He is tied for third on the team in
game-winning goals (two) and is tied for fourth on the team in goals
(eight) this season.
– Derek Stepan notched two assists and posted a plus-two rating in the game. The Rangers’ alternate captain is tied for second in the NHL in assists (21) since he made his season debut on Nov. 8.
Stepan has registered a point in 18 of 27 games this season, and has
posted three multi-point games in his last seven contests (three goals,
five assists in the last seven games). He ranks second on the team in
assists, ranks fourth on the team in points (27), and ranks fifth on the
team in plus/minus rating (plus-10) this season.
– Martin St. Louis tallied a goal, recorded
two shots on goal, and posted a plus-two rating in the game. The
Rangers’ alternate captain has registered a point in six of the last
eight games (four goals, five assists), 15 of the last 23 games (nine
goals, 11 assists), and 19 of the last 29 games (13 goals, 13 assists).
He ranks second on the Rangers in goals (14) and ranks third on the team
in points (32) this season.
– Rick Nash registered an empty-net goal, led all skaters with seven shots on goal, and led all Rangers with two takeaways in the contest. The six-time NHL All-Star is tied for the NHL-lead in goals (26) and leads the league in games with a goal (21) this season.
Nash has registered a point in 29 of 39 games in 2014-15 – including
each of the last four games – and he has tallied a point in 19 of the
Rangers’ 24 victories this season. In addition to being tied for the
league lead in goals, Nash ranks seventh in the NHL in shots on goal
(145), is tied for seventh in the NHL in takeaways (35), and is tied for
eighth in the NHL in plus/minus rating (plus-19). He is the only player to rank in the top 10 in the NHL in goals, plus/minus rating, and takeaways this season.
– Dan Girardi recorded an assist, tied for
the game-high with four hits, tied for the team-high with three blocked
shots, and posted a plus-two rating in 20:58 of ice time. The Rangers’
alternate captain has recorded a point in two consecutive games, which
is the third time has done so this season. Girardi leads the Rangers in hits (102) and blocked shots (85) this season.
– Mats Zuccarello recorded an assist and posted a plus-one rating in the contest. He
has tallied a point in seven of the last 10 games (one goal, seven
assists) and in 10 of the last 14 games (three goals, nine assists over
the span). Zuccarello ranks fourth on the Rangers in plus/minus
rating (plus-12), is tied for fourth on the team in assists (15), and
ranks fifth in points (22) this season.
– Jesper Fast tied for the game-high with four hits and recorded two shots on goal in the contest. The
Rangers have won the last 13 games in which Fast has been in the
lineup. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Fast is the first Ranger
to be on the winning side in 13 straight games in one season in the
NHL’s modern era (since the center ice red line was introduced during
the 1943-44 season).
REACTION:
Just WOW. Who could've imagined a 13 out of 14 game win streak? To sweep both the western Canada & California trips is a first time ever in Rangers history, as noted above. The Rangers are doing this in every way possible. The powerplay is hot. The penalty killing is hot. Getting the puck out of dirty areas is working. The only real criticism you could really have is that you would like to see Brassard & Stepan shoot more when they have open looks.
The biggest controversy in the Rangers 3-1 trampling of the Sharks was Mats Zuccarello's goal in the third period. As clear as day in the picture above, Zuccs scored, which would've put the Rangers up 3-0 in the game. However, Toronto said no goal. This is really bullshit in my opinion. You can see in the picture that the puck is over goal line. What other evidence do you need? Are the referees from the Dallas/Detroit NFL game in Toronto? As sports fans, we just want to see the right call. Don't get me started on the silly flags that have plagued the NFL playoffs this season. In this day and age, with the technology we have, there is no excuse to miss a call or get a call wrong.
What if Zucc was going for the scoring title? What if the Rangers lost this game? What if Zucc had a contract, similar to baseball, that rewarded him based on milestones? To take a goal away, WHEN WE HAVE 100% VIDEO AND PHOTO PROOF, can not be acceptable. Toronto takes all the time in the world to make these calls and there was no excuse to get this wrong. I know I'm a homer for the Rangers here, on DOINOW.com, but I would say the same thing if the Sharks had a puck past Lundqvist this way. Just inexcusable.
On this blog, I've given Henrik Lundqvist a ton of shit. It all boils down to the fact that he's the highest paid goalie in the league, but doesn't play like that consistently. Let me be the first to say, that I thought this was Henrik's best game of the season. There were many reasons why the Rangers should've lost this game. They are on the road. They've peaked. You can only streak for so long. Rangers got fucked on the Zucc goal. The Sharks were all over the net. However, Henrik made 30 saves, many of them being difficult, to help seal this win. Sure, Papajohn's got fucked again, with the Rangers producing 3 goals, but Lundqvist was the best he's been in a while.
This is what I expect from Hank. Maybe I'm spoiled watching him over the years. I want this production every night, when my goalie is the the highest paid goalie in the NHL. There's no excuse to blow 2 goal leads, give up 15 goals to Tampa in 3 games, get blown away in the home opener or be embarrassed by the Islanders. Just like the Hank of old, I expect Hank to steal games and be the best player on the ice on any given night. Hank was just that, against the Sharks.
For a guy who always pushes for Cam Talbot, and perhaps Talbot's play has put some pressure on Hank, I was impressed and pleased with Henrik Lundqvist tonight. I expect this every game. Lundqvist, King Contract, was on top of his game and showed the NHL how he could be the best player in the league when he's hot. It's still hard for me to call him a King with no crown, but hopefully that will change, come June this year. If there's anything I can say about Hank's play tonight, it's "KEEP IT UP HANK AND BEAT THE FUCKING ISLANDERS AT HOME!"
Based on the stats above and memory alone, this is the best I've ever seen the Rangers play in the regular season. They are beating the teams they should beat, and beating the top teams in the league. They are the hottest team in the league. With games against the Islanders & Penguins this week, the Rangers could jump to first place by this time next week. Every game is bigger than the next, as the Rangers try to get on top of the Metropolitan division.
A couple of thoughts on the All-Star game, if you will. Those jerseys are ugly as fuck. It looks like a bad Create-a-Jersey from a video game. I don't like the fantasy draft aspect of the All-Star game either. I miss the classic East vs West match-ups. Why you have two western conference teams coaching is beyond me.
Rick Nash makes the All-Star team, as he should. Some people said Hank was snubbed, but they must've forgot the first 33% of the season. I thought Kevin Klein was snubbed. Maybe he's not sexy enough for the All-Star voters, but he belongs there. I also thought Jagr, from the Devils, got a raw deal. This is what happens when every team needs a representative, players on other teams get screwed. How nice of the NHL to throw in 5 Blackhawks though. In either event, Nash's reaction in Columbus should be interesting.
While on Nash and Jagr, Nash, at 26 goals at the half-way point at the season, has a shot at beating Jagr's single-season Goals record, as a Ranger, as Jagr set the bar at 54, during the 2005-2006 season. Time will tell if Nash could surpass that mark.
QUICK SHOTS:
- The Islanders are playing their best hockey since the '80's. Beating the Islanders on Tuesday is huge. Each game is bigger than the next, due to the Rangers schedule.
- The Penguins and Capitals are having a hard time losing too. Even during this 13/14 game win-streak, the Rangers are keeping pace and are third in the division. As it is right now, the Rangers would play the Islanders in the first round of the playoffs. I don't know if Ranger fans want that match-up right now. Winning the division would give Ranger fans relief, going into the playoffs.
- The Knicks. Why do people pay for tickets? If you pay for tickets and show up to the games, with the prices they charge, you are just embracing the status-quo. Don't go to the games. Don't pay for tickets. Let these low-life losers play in front of a crowd smaller than a WNBA crowd.
- Anyone going to Francesacon? My crew will be there in full-force in Rangers and Diet Coke gear!
- That Patriots/Ravens game was what the NFL playoffs are all about - terrible officiating. Patriots were lucky to escape with a win. As I predicted, Patriots vs Seahawks look like the probable Superbowl match-up. For the record, I'm going with Denver & Green Bay tomorrow. I just don't see how any of the home teams lose this weekend.
- The NFL needs to have a referee upstairs to either call or disallow penalties via the replay. In this day and age, teams are being eliminated from the playoffs due to shoddy officiating. Imagine being a Lions fan right now. Something needs to be done. Having a referee, upstairs, to radio on the field about a missed or a penalty that should've never been called needs to happen in this day and age. Team fates are being decided by the refs and no one wants that.
- For the record, I'm going with Oregon to win the BCS Bowl on Monday. I still think Jameis Winston winds up with the Jets too, and both losers deserve each other.
- For my wrestling people, caught some of TNA on Thursday. What a joke. The production, the story telling, and everything else. YUCK. Sad for the wrestling business.
